The Ultimate Bruges Long Weekend Guide: Explore the Venice of the North

Updated: Dec 4

Planning a weekend getaway to Bruges? This picturesque Belgian city, often called the "Venice of the North," is a dream destination filled with cobblestone streets, medieval architecture, and mouthwatering chocolate. I had such an amazing time exploring this city, and have genuinely been recommending it to everybody I know since returning. In this ultimate guide, discover the best things to do, see, and eat during your Bruges weekend adventure.

Why Visit Bruges?

Bruges is a Medieval UNESCO World Heritage city that really does feel like stepping into a fairytale. With its canals, historic landmarks, and delicious food, Bruges offers something for every traveler. Whether you're a history buff, foodie, or romantic at heart, this charming city won't disappoint.

Day 1:

Morning: Start with Market Square

Begin your Bruges weekend in the iconic Grote Markt, home to colorful medieval buildings and the Belfry of Bruges. Climb the 366 steps of the belfry for panoramic views of the city.

Don’t miss:

  • The best views in the square from the Duvelorium Beer Hall (above the Historium Brugge)

  • Chocolatier Dumon, just off the Grote Markt

  • Climbing the Belfry for the most incredible views of the city

Afternoon: Step back into time

Bruges is well known for its Medieval architecture, and its beautiful canals - combine the two by visiting the Adornes Domein and Jerusalem Chapel by way of Jan Van Eyckplein.

Don’t miss:

  • The Jerusalem Chapel at the Adornes Domein was consecrated in 1429, and is an incredible example of Medieval architecture

  • The beautiful canals around Jan Van Eyckplein are some of my favorite in the city, and are a little quieter than the more central canals

  • If you have time: The Friet museum is on the way back to central Bruges from Jan Van Eyckplein, and is a super fun and unique way to learn about Belgian culture, through one of their most famous culinary masterpieces - the french fry.

Evening: Dine like a local

Grab a drink at Le Trappiste, located in an 800 year old Medieval cellar, with over two dozen beers on tap, then head over to the ultra-cool De Republiek, where the kitchen serves up delicious meals made from local produce, all in a warm, buzzy, and welcoming atmosphere.

Don’t miss:

  • The seasonally changing desserts made from local vendors at De Republiek are unbelievably yummy

Day 2:

Morning: Discover Bruges' Museums

History buffs can’t miss the Gruuthusemuseum, which showcases Flemish art and historical artefacts, or the Museum Sint Janshospitaal, dedicated to Belgium’s storied medical history and located in an incredible old 12-th century hospital. It's truly one of the more unique museums I've ever been to!

Don’t miss:

  • Grabbing a waffle at Otto Waffle Atelier, conveniently located right next to Sint Janshospitaal.

  • Alternatively, if you're more of a savory person, FritBar Bruges, which is next to Otto, offers some of the best vegetarian-alternative friets (many of the fries in the city are cooked in the traditional Belgian way, in beef fat)

  • The Gruuthusemuseum is home to one of the most iconic views in Bruges, off of its upstairs balcony

  • Just outside of the Gruuthusemuseum, you can find the Boniface Bridge, which is one of the prettiest and most popular bridges to photograph in the city (so get there early!)

Afternoon: Indulge in a Unique Experience

It was in Bruges that I finally ticked off one of my quirkier bucket list items - bathing in beer! I know it sounds a bit gross, but Bruges' very own Bath and Barley Belgian Beer Spa is a completely relaxing, sanitary (it has to be said), and indulgent experience. Soak in a craft wooden tub for an hour with your very own hop scrub, and enjoy!

Don’t miss:

  • Take advantage of the limitless Belgian beer on tap at the spa (comes with the price of the room) or pick your own beer flight from the several they have available!

Evening: Try Local Delicacies

One of the most famous restaurants in all of Bruges, De Vlaamsche Pot, also happens to be one of the best, in my opinion. It's a beautiful old building tucked away down a side street, and the inside looks like somebody's grandmother's living room - in the best way. It's cozy and warm, and the traditional Flemish food is absolutely delicious.

Don’t miss:

  • The waterzooi is a delicious local delicacy - a creamy soup cooked with vegetables and potatoes, alongside your choice of seafood, chicken, or vegetables. I chose the local seafood, which I loved!

Day 3:

Morning: Explore the City's Canals

You can't come to the city nicknamed "The Venice of the North" and not go on a boat cruise along the canals! Make your way to Huidenvettersplein 13, 8000 Brugge in order to catch a half hour-long boat tour, with a knowledgeable guide who can tell you the history of the city.

Don’t miss:

  • Bring your camera for this trip, because you'll get to see the whole city from the water in this museum!

  • Carry an umbrella in case of changing weather!

Afternoon: Shop Local & Chocolate Tasting

In addition to being a beautiful and cultural city, Bruges is also amazing for exploring small businesses, art, and - my favorite - chocolate. I loved Chocolatier Dumon and The Chocolate Line, both of which are home to truly delicious chocolate, but approached from very different artisinal styles. I also loved poking into the beautiful shops in Bruges - you can tell they're local small businesses from the "Brugge Shop Local" signs in the windows!

Don’t miss:

  • We Are Coffee Makers for delicious coffee and baked goods

  • 2be for amazing beer and unique souvenirs!

Top Tips for a Perfect Weekend in Bruges

  • Getting Around: Bruges is very walkable, but renting a bike is a great way to explore more of the city. Some hotels - like the one I recommend below even provide bikes for their guests!

  • Best Time to Visit: I went in late September and loved my time there - the city felt so cozy and intimate during the Autumn, and the crowds were more than manageable.

  • Where to Stay: I stayed at Hotel Adornes on Sint-Annarei and absolutely loved it. The location is walkable into the city, but offers a quieter and more peaceful location for evenings, and the local family that run the hotel are so friendly and helpful. My bedroom was beautiful, spacious, and overlooking the canals!

With its enchanting canals, historic landmarks, and culinary delights, Bruges promises an unforgettable weekend escape. Use this guide to make the most of your time and create memories that will last a lifetime - and make sure to follow along with my travels at @elise.abroad on social media!
